These past decisions have provided life lessons on the need to stop and think before making decisions.  Influences are all around us.  Sometimes it’s a loved one or emotions.  Influences are not always negative, but something of which to be aware when making decisions. 
 
The following sections and exercises will help identify components that can influence decisions. Although circumstances and individuals can influence our choices, we have ultimate control of the actions we choose to take.
 
The next few pages will explore at how goals, values, self-esteem, conflict, stress and alcohol and other drug use can influence choices and can lead to a variety of consequences.  There are many things in life that cannot be controlled, but each person has the power to make their own choices.
